Day 22: An Outsider’s Point of View

Karin woke up startled, the crying of the newest Uchiha heir
could be heard all across the base, it was the fifth time that night that she’d
been woken up by the noise of her crying. She made her way to their room ready
to be of some help to Sakura who had to be beyond tired after having giving
birth and having to take care of her newborn daughter.

Karin didn’t expect Sasuke to be of much help, remembering
clearly the cold Sasuke back from Team Takka. It was a surprise when she paused
outside their room and from the semi open door saw as Sasuke took Sarada away
from Sakura’s arms and into his.

Sakura explained in a tired voice how to properly hold the
baby, but Sasuke seemed to know how to do it. His hold was firm but gentle as
he rocked her tenderly in his arms humming what appeared to be a lullaby.

Sakura smiled from the bed as she watched her husband, her
eyes held none of the shock of Karin’s own expression as she looked at the
scene from a distance.

The man in the room was a stranger to her.

In no time at all the Uchiha princess in his arms stopped
crying and softly he set her down in the little crib they had made for her.

Karin was about to walk away, clearly she wasn’t needed, but
then she saw as Sasuke walked over to his wife and placed a hand on her cheek.
Sakura leaned in to the touch. Karin felt as if she was intruding and walked
away, but as she did she heard Sasuke speak to Sakura, “I love you.” and those
words resonated around the base and followed her to her own room.

Day 25: Maybe Next Time

Next time he leaves she is there already, waiting. Her back
rests against the trunk of the tree, her arms crossed over her chest as she
turns her gaze to him. He makes note of the backpack at her feet. “Where are we
going?” She asks and Sasuke doesn’t need to ask what she’s doing at the road
out of the village.

How did she know? How does she ever know?

It still remains a mystery.

“We?” He asks, although he knows that questioning her is
futile, she is as stubborn as she is inhumanly strong.

“I’m not staying behind this time, and don’t even try to knock me out.” He wouldn’t dare,
he starts walking again and makes a motion with his hand for her to follow. “Where
are we going?” She asks again as she picks up her backpack and falls into step
with him.

He shrugs, he didn’t have a travel plan in mind. “Where do
you want to go?” He asks her instead.

“Everywhere. I want to form new memories together.”

Day 26: Hawk Mail

Sasuke Uchiha is not a fan of the new emerging technology.
Naruto likes to pester him about it, how he can’t use a cellphone and he can,
he just doesn’t like to. There’s an intimacy lost in the technology, it loses
that personal touch that can only be transmitted by a more traditional form of
messaging.

Technology will never be able to recreate the creases in the
paper created by the hawk’s delivery. Or the elegant but somehow at the same time
messy handwriting that he recognizes as Sakura’s. It’ll never be enough to
transmit the feeling behind her words as she writes, with love, at the end of every letter and how her pen seems to have
hesitated at the last syllable, wanting to write more.

Occasionally there are tea stains on the letters, sometimes
coffee stains, and more rarely stains of food at the paper’s edge. It speaks of
exhaustion, a convoluted schedule or a messy eating companion.

Sometimes the letters are divided in sections, and because
of the almost unnoticeable differences in her writing he can tell she wrote it
in the span of a day or a week. Sometimes there’s a P.S. added as an afterthought, most of the times a tale of something
Sarada or Naruto did, these are things he knows she’d like to say to him in
person.

So when he messages Sakura he prefers the old fashioned way,
and holds her letters close to heart.

Day 27: The Trek Home

lotr au

It took him a while to notice, how her feet moved sluggishly
and her back tense as she walked. Naruto and Kakashi were several steps ahead
followed by Sakura, the huge axe in her back made it hard to see but her side
was stained with blood.

In a couple of long strides he was besides her. “I can get
that looked at for you.” He offered, there was a shocked expression that only
lasted for a moment before it was replaced with a defensive stance.

“I’m fine, besides we’ll be home soon.” She dismissed him,
he should have left it at that. Arguing with her wasn’t on top of his favorite
things to do, but he should have seen it. “And if I’d ask someone for help it
would be Kakashi.”

“Right, but you don’t want anyone else to know you were hurt
and I’m not going to shut up about it until you get that patched up. Either you
get Kakashi to heal you or we take a little detour, get you patched up and be
back behind them before anyone knows we were gone.” She glared at him, she
could be stubborn but he could be even more so.

“Fine.” Her agreement came through gritted teeth and he
could tell she was debating on whether to punch him or not.

She took a seat on a fallen tree trunk and dropped her axe
to the ground. He reached in his pouch for the medical supplies and knelt
beside her. Carefully he raised the side of her shirt revealing a nasty cut on
her side from a sword.

He wiped away the excess of blood and pretended not to
notice as she flinched. Taking the ointment Kakashi had given him he spread it
generously against the injury and reached for the cloth to wrap around her
abdomen.

“There.” He spoke, his hand lingering against the skin of
her stomach, his eyes unable to look away from her scarred skin. “When we get
back home, you should ask Kakashi to take a look.” Noticing his fixation she
yanked her shirt down to cover herself.

She stood, her back to him as she picked up her weapon and
strapped it to her back. “I’ve had worse.”
