Where The Heart Is

Day 27: The Trek Home
***
It’s actually connected to day 26, but it can also stand on its own.
***
“Are we going home, now?”
Mikoto smiled sadly at her son. “Sasuke, this is our home now.”
“No it’s not,” the little boy insisted. “This is not Konoha. I don’t have friends here.”
“You’ll make new friends, Sasuke,” his father added.
“But I’m sure no one can match Sakura-chan, huh Sasuke?” Itachi teased him. A blush spread across his cheeks, and his family gave each other knowing smiles. But then the lad’s face saddened, immediately missing his best friend. It’s been a week now, but he still thinks of her. It’s the first time they’ve been separated, having known each other even before they learned to walk.
Slowly, he started to adjust to his new environment. He found a friend in Naruto, and both share a bond of friendship and rivalry. He grew up to be a fine young man, and fangirls flocked to him. Though he was the top student in their school, popular, and everyone wanted to be friends with him, he still kept a portion of his heart special for Sakura.
.
He never forgot, as he promised to her.
.
Sasuke kept their photo together in his bedside table, so that Sakura’s smiling face would be the first thing he sees when he wakes up and the last he sees when he goes to sleep. He was loyal to her, and no other girl could change that.
His only wish was to come back to Konoha. Due to his father’s work, it was hard to make it come true. But he held on to hope. One Christmas night, the Uchihas gathered at their living room to open their presents. Sasuke found an envelope for him from his father. He looked at him, a bit confused, but his father just gave him a nod.
He opened it, and saw a postcard of Konoha. It didn’t contain any letter at the back. It just showed the beauty of his hometown.
“What does this mean, dad?”
Sasuke was surprised to see them smiling at him, as if they know something he didn’t. Mikoto looked at her husband and he gave an affirming nod. With a giggle, she approached her son, happiness causing her eyes to sparkle.
“We’re going back to Konoha, Sasuke. For good.”
He stared at them, dumfounded. When he regained his composure, he hugged his family. Finally, he’ll come back home. To Sakura.
The night before they moved back to Konoha, Sasuke couldn’t sleep. Hundreds of what ifs swarmed in his mind.
.
What if Sakura didn’t wait for him?
.
What if she forgot?
.
What if she lost hope that he’ll be back?
.
He tried to keep the thoughts away. No, Sakura is not like that. She’s special.
Finally home to Konoha, he didn’t seek her out yet. On the day of the high school entrance ceremony, Sasuke walked first towards the home that holds a lot of memories.
Sakura’s house remained the same, though with a little alteration, and still recognizable. Sasuke waited outside the gates, excited for her to come out and meet her after so many years of separation. When he heard her voice, a warm feeling enveloped his heart. Then the door finally opened, but she didn’t notice him yet, her attention caught by his letter.
A soft smile graced his features. She still looked liked the girl he secretly loved all those years ago, though now her appearance is more grown up. She kept her hair the color of cherry blossoms long, and even from a distance, he already felt the warmth she radiates that he missed terribly.
Sakura smiled, still as bright as ever. She finally read his letter, it seems, and her reaction made all his worries disappear.
.
.
“Tadaima, Sakura.”
.
.
He saw her stiffen. When she slowly looked up, her emerald eyes met his onyx ones. They still shined, and Sasuke basked in its radiance. He gave her a soft smile as she stared at him, obviously bewildered. When realization dawned on her, the happiness on her face was contagious.
Sasuke opened his arms for her, knowing that he can’t wait any longer. As she rushed towards him, he hugged her with equal force. Home is where the heart is, they say. This was home.
.
“Okaeri, Sasuke-kun.”

Day 27: The Trek Homelotr au
It took him a while to notice, how her feet moved sluggishly
and her back tense as she walked. Naruto and Kakashi were several steps ahead
followed by Sakura, the huge axe in her back made it hard to see but her side
was stained with blood. In a couple of long strides he was besides her. “I can get
that looked at for you.” He offered, there was a shocked expression that only
lasted for a moment before it was replaced with a defensive stance.“I’m fine, besides we’ll be home soon.” She dismissed him,
he should have left it at that. Arguing with her wasn’t on top of his favorite
things to do, but he should have seen it. “And if I’d ask someone for help it
would be Kakashi.”“Right, but you don’t want anyone else to know you were hurt
and I’m not going to shut up about it until you get that patched up. Either you
get Kakashi to heal you or we take a little detour, get you patched up and be
back behind them before anyone knows we were gone.” She glared at him, she
could be stubborn but he could be even more so.“Fine.” Her agreement came through gritted teeth and he
could tell she was debating on whether to punch him or not.She took a seat on a fallen tree trunk and dropped her axe
to the ground. He reached in his pouch for the medical supplies and knelt
beside her. Carefully he raised the side of her shirt revealing a nasty cut on
her side from a sword. He wiped away the excess of blood and pretended not to
notice as she flinched. Taking the ointment Kakashi had given him he spread it
generously against the injury and reached for the cloth to wrap around her
abdomen.“There.” He spoke, his hand lingering against the skin of
her stomach, his eyes unable to look away from her scarred skin. “When we get
back home, you should ask Kakashi to take a look.” Noticing his fixation she
yanked her shirt down to cover herself. She stood, her back to him as she picked up her weapon and
strapped it to her back. “I’ve had worse.”

Day 27 – The Trek Home
.
.
The air that he breathes feels clearer. Its crisp, its different. Every step is not riddled with burden, not any more. He will not forget his role, his duty – but he can come home.
His job, for now, is over.
The old gates of Konoha have seen better days, he passes by the sleeping guard and continues his trek onwards towards his home. The city is a little quieter, most are at work or school during this time. Protocol dictates that he check in with the Hokage before returning home, but for once he decides to break that rule.
There is no harm in that.
He comes before their apartment complex. He begins to climb their stairs. He makes his way to the door marked with no insignia. This is their home – for now.
Unlocking the door, Sasuke steps foot into the flat. He can sense the presence of another; his wife, she is in their bedroom. Without intentionally meaning to be quiet, Sasuke silently makes his way towards the room.
He opens to door, the sight before him freezes him in his tracks. Sakura is changing clothes. She is picking up a shirt and wears nothing more than a bra and panties. She notices his presence immediately.
In a reactionary decision, Sasuke mutters out a nonplussed, “oh”.
Sakura’s eyes widen, she screams, “get out, perv!” she throws her shirt at him, it lands on his head.
.
.
.“I’m sorry,” she holds out a peace offering, she’d made a batch of omusubi (with okaka and tomatoes). Sasuke accepts the offer, he takes a rather large bite out of the rice ball.
Sakura sits on the couch beside him, “I’m really sorry, I thought you were Naruto”.
With his mouth partially full, Sasuke slowly turns to his wife, “…why would you think that?”
“Because you entered the room as I was half-naked”.
His blood begins to simmer, “…and?”
“And,” she purses her lips, “ah, never mind. How do you like the rice ball?”
His grip around the omusubi tightens.
He stands up. As does Sakura.
“Sasuke-kun, no!”
“Don’t worry,” he remarks with an agitated tone, “its not about that, I merely need to check in with the Hokage to notify him of my arrival back, and to officially sign off on the mission”.
Sakura sighs, and folds her arms over her chest, “just bring him, or yourself, round to the emergency room when you’re done”.
“Sakura’s waiting for me.”
