Laying the Groundwork

wolf08:

A/N: SURPRISE: I wrote a new
thing! So my brain was in dire need of producing something with a little more
humour and a lot more romance than the other things I’ve been writing as of
late. Alas, this steamy, fun little story happened. This is Part I of II or
III. Hope you like it! 😊

A/N 2: I began to write this
for the ss month prompt “Connected Feelings” but evidently I really missed the
deadline.

Summary: Sasuke
and Sakura are both ready for physical intimacy, but neither is willing to make
a move until the other expresses where their feelings stand. The catch is that
neither knows how to express where
their feelings stand. SasuSaku. Blank period.

Genre: Romance / Humour

Rated: T (Teen) for sexual
themes

Disclaimer: All
characters belong to the great Masashi Kishimoto

PART I

It was the first night Sasuke
and Sakura agreed to share a bed.

And I know what you’re
thinking: our vagabond heroes are winding up for a steamy, passionate night,
aren’t they? I mean, finally, after
months of mutual dependency and roaming foreign lands, prowling the wild like
predators and becoming attuned to each others’ basic, primal needs, Sasuke and
Sakura must be ready to put a
physical seal on their ever-growing, soul-connecting emotional bond… right?

Well, not exactly.

It was a choice borne of
logic, not passion, because the only single-person rooms available at the only
inn in town were enormous and, frankly, irritatingly
expensive (to borrow a word from Sasuke himself). “What’s there to see in
this town that made them hike up the prices?” Sasuke mumbled into his
travelling companion’s ear, while ignoring the clerk’s glare. She could hear
everything he was saying.

He’s got a point, Sakura
thought, because this little town, somewhere on the Northern boarders of Fire
country, wasn’t even a spec on the maps. “We could just share,” she proposed
while trying to keep her voice as nonchalant as one possibly could when
suggesting something so obviously… suggestive.

Sasuke stared at her for a
moment while a million thoughts crossed his mind. Could she… She doesn’t want to…?

He stopped himself
mid-thought.

No, that wasn’t what this was about. Sakura was practical and
resourceful and that was why she
wanted to share a room (and that was why he liked her).

“One room,” he said to the
clerk.

“First of all, thank you for allowing me to have this interview in you amazing mansion, Sasuke and Sakura,” Ino, famous magazine editor and friend of the Uchihas, smiled as she took a seat on a rather comfy armchair in the living room. The married couple sat at the sofa across from her.

“It’s actually more convenient for us, Ino, so no biggie,” Sakura confirmed.

“I only agreed because I lost the bet,” Sasuke piped in. His wife chuckled and held his hand. “Take it as a lesson not to bet with me, anata. Besides, I owe Ino a favor. She wanted this interview very badly.”

He sighed, giving in. A maid came to serve them drinks and some snacks. After a few minutes of eating and idle chatter, Ino finally started with the main reason why she came.

“So as you know, I’m making a feature about modern couples and their families. Sasuke, a general in the army, and Sakura, chief doctor of Konoha hospital. You guys have been married for five years now, and you have Sarada, my precious goddaughter. So tell me, how it is like after saying your wedding vows?

The couple looked at each other and smiled tenderly. “I think the major difference is moving into one house,” Sakura responded. “Other than that, nothing much changed… well… aside from my last name. Sasuke-kun’s my friend, first of all. We fell in love, became a couple, and got married. Throughout those years of knowing each other, it felt natural just being together.”

“We still learn new things about each other, though,” Sasuke supplemented.

Ino nodded. “You guys are super busy as well. I know Sasuke has to go around a lot. And you, Sakura, being the chief doctor is no joke. How do you find some family and couple time?”

“It can be tricky,” Sakura admitted. “Sometimes our free time doesn’t match. But we make sure that as much as possible dinners and Sunday mornings are allotted for us. When our schedule allows, we take vacations too. It just needs perfect time management.”

“And when you guys are apart, how do you ease the loneliness?”

Sakura smiled and rested her head on her husband’s shoulder. “Modern technology is a blessing, of course. We send our good morning texts, have calls as long as possible… like a true couple in a long distance relationship. Absence does make the heart grow fonder in our case. At the end of the day, we know that we have each other to come home to.”

A gentle smile appeared on Sasuke’s face. “Though we’re apart, we know that our feelings are truly connected.”

“And how do you confirm that?”

Suddenly they heard the pitter patter of little feet, followed by a giggle. Both Sakura and Sasuke smiled as their daughter came towards them, obviously awake from her nap and running away from the maids in charge of her. The pinkette opened her arms and the little girl hugged her mother. She laid her on her lap and her parents held her chubby hand.

“Because we have her, our daughter Sarada,” Sasuke answered.

Sakura had sensed his chakra before he had even reached the porch, but her brain had already tricked her so many times that she preferred to wait. He eventually would open the door if he was really there. Or maybe not… After several minutes went by, she was sure that he was standing by the front door. Static. He hadn’t taken a step in any direction and she knew why.

prompt: ssm17, day 29- connected feelings

summary: sasuke recalls the moment he knew.

notes: better late than never…?

“tell me about when you first fell in love with mama,” his daughter had asked him one sunday evening, somewhere near the border to takigakure. it was their first mission together, the first one he had said yes to, that is. intel was simple enough, but danger seemed to follow people like sasuke, and he knew that.

a request like this just five years ago might have terrified him, more than any foe he had ever faced, especially coming from the one person in his life he wanted most to impress. though after years of small steps, of forging a bond with his child he could only ever have dreamed of, sasuke only posed, “what do you want to know?”

the fifteen year old pursed her lips in a way all too similar to a face her mother made when deep in thought, and his heart only ached in the slightest, he missed her always, even in the short windows they were apart. “i guess,” sarada searched for the words, “i just want to know when you knew.”

“when i knew,” sasuke repeated her considerately, earning a small chuckle in response, “i was preparing to leave the village, the second time, for my mission.”

he had come to the decision on his own, all there was to do was receive permission from kakashi, to pack, and to go. naruto accepted the decision reluctantly, but with steadfast support. when the time came to tell sakura, he struggled, avoided it, told himself it would be best just to leave and hope at the end of the day she didn’t hate him hate him hate him. more than anything, he denied just why it was so hard to say goodbye.

it was late one night that he walked her home after a ramen outing with the dobe. she had worked a full eighty hours that week, despite any protests from he or naruto that she might work herself to death. sasuke didn’t sleep much in those days, but there had always been something oddly restful about listening to her talk about anything, deep into the hours of the night. “we’re still working on the mobility of the metacarpal, but just a few more days and i think he’ll be back in commission,” she said about the arm she and the godaime had engineered for naruto, as if it was all in a day’s work. it took everything in him not to scoff at how blissfully unaware she was of her own brilliance.

“you’re quiet,” she said, tearing him from his reverie. “well, more quiet, than usual.”

a frown pulled at his features as they stopped in their tracks, just down the street from her home. “sakura,” he spoke.

“sasuke-kun,” she responded, a flash of humor in her eyes.

“i need to tell you something,” he said, doing his best to look her in the eyes; doing his best not to think of the comfort it was knowing he would see her each day, to hear every mundane daily issue, each fleeting thought. he tried to forget for a moment that he would miss her.

“you’re leaving.”

a pulse of shock filled his heart, before he sobered, his eyes dropping to the ground, “you knew?”

“mm,” she nodded, kicking at pebbles that weren’t there, “i had a feeling, and i guess i was right.”

he didn’t know what to say, and felt for a moment that his stomach might just seize up and fall right off. “i’m sorry,” he managed quietly.

“for what?” she asked, and he noticed the nearly undetectable way her heart weighed heavily in her gaze.

he shook his head, shrugging, “i’m trying to apologize when i feel it’s in order.”

she breathed a half-hearted laugh, “i guess we all have to start somewhere.” he felt her hand squeeze at his bicep and turned to meet her eyes; and for a split second, for the first time, he wished for his other arm if only to place a hand over her own.

“just do me one favor,” she drew closer, her hand slid down his arm, and she pulled his palm to her chest.

anything, he wanted to say. anything.

“will you,” she fought hard against the blush that filled her cheeks, “will you think of me?”

sasuke tried not to hate himself so much at the idea that she would have to ask, if only because he wanted to remember this, years from now, happily. then and there, standing before her, his repertoire of happy memories was little more than a page in a long instructional manual on how to live a life of irreparable sadness. but he remembered joy, as well as all the nights he had mourned her sweet presence in his existence. this moment, no matter the outcome, would be a joyous memory. a beginning.

the breeze of night swept over them as he pulled her hand to his own chest.

“i love you, and i will always think of you.”

always.

sarada stared across the waning campfire at her father, a sobered happiness in her eyes, wondering where she had seen this expression on his face. this softness, this calm. it seemed so out of place. warmth enveloped her form as it finally dawned on her.

“maybe i should have asked you this on the way home?” she mused with a sprinkle of humor.

he scoffed, turning his head to get some rest.

a small smile pulled at her lips as she heard him say to himself, “maybe.”

“Papa!”

Sarada hugged her father tightly. Sasuke returned the gesture and smiled softly as she looked up to him happily. “You’re just in time, papa.” Her smile turned into a frown. “Mama’s sick.”

He stiffened. “What happened to your mama, Sarada?”

She released her hold on him and led the way to her parent’s room. “Mama got the flu. I think she got it from one of her patients. She’s been working hard too much lately too.” Sarada opened the door, and both saw the sleeping form on the bed. Sasuke immediately rushed towards his wife and laid his palm on her forehead.

“I already gave mama her breakfast and medicine, papa. I was about to call aunt Ino to take care of mama today, since I have a mission.”

“Would it be long?” he asked.

She shook her head. “No, papa. Just a simple one. I’ll try to come home early.” Sarada then took a piece of paper and wrote things down. “Here’s the medications mama should take and when she would have it. Also, I made soup for lunch. Makes sure she eats lots of it, okay papa? Mama also needs lots of water. And papa, when mama says she’s fine, don’t believe her. She can be very stubborn and will go back to work again. Tell her to just rest and don’t worry a thing. I’ll do some grocery shopping later for dinner. Did you get it all, papa?”

A small, amused smile formed on his face. “Yes, Sarada.”

“Well then, I’m off! Take care of mama, papa!” She slowly closed the door, hurriedly wore her sandals, and ran off. Sasuke was left staring at the piece of paper his daughter gave him.

She sounds just like Sakura, he mused.

He sat down on the bed, removing the stray hairs that fell on her face. She stirred a little, her eyes slowly opening.

“S-Sasuke-kun?”

Sakura tried to sit up but Sasuke held her shoulder to stop her. “Don’t force yourself. You need to rest.”

The medic obliged, too tired to argue. “Okaeri, anata.”

He gave her a soft smile and kissed her forehead. “Tadaima, Sakura.”

“Have you… have you eaten? I think Sarada prepared something…”

Sasuke shook his head. “No need. Besides, I’m here to take care of you.”

His wife smiled up to him. “Arigatou, anata.” She noticed the piece of paper in his hand. “What’s that?”

He held it up for her to see. “A list of medicines you have to take, as well as when to take it. This also came with a reminder to make you drink lots of water, eat the soup she made for lunch, let you get a good rest, and she’ll go to the grocery later.” Mismatched orbs looked at his daughter’s handwriting. “It’s still hard to believe she’s grown.”

Sakura giggled. “It seems like only yesterday when we held her in our arms, ne Sasuke-kun? Now she’s a genin, and a great one I might add.” She reached out to hold her husband’s hand. “Our little girl is not so little anymore.”

The pinkette squeezed his hand and he returned the gesture. “Time flies so fast these days,” he added. “One day, she’s holding my hand while trying to walk. Now, she’s running off to do missions like we used to.” Sasuke then decided to lay beside his wife, holding her close to him.

“I feel old,” Sakura said with a laugh. “One day, she’ll reach her dreams, have her own family… then we’ll be grandparents, anata.”

“I’m not yet ready to be a grandpa,” he admitted. His wife chuckled, content with hearing the steady rhythm of his heart.

“It’s my dream, you know. Growing old with you, Sasuke-kun.” Her husband the caressed her hair. “That future… with you…”

Sakura felt her eyes getting heavy. Sasuke sensed this, and planted a kiss on her head. “Go back to sleep, Sakura. I’m here.”

She closed her eyes, falling asleep to the beat of his heart and warmth. No matter how much time passed, the love they shared never wavered.

SasuSaku Month 2017
Day 29: Connected Feelings

Every time he comes home he leaves, but it’s easier watching
him leave than it was the first time. There’s a certainty now that he’ll come
back.

It’s not the life Sakura thought they would have, apart more
often than not. Their child grows up without her father, and they live in a
house far too empty for their liking. His absence is a hole that eats her away and
she wishes they had made the time to get their wedding picture retaken, she
wishes she would have thought to catalogue all the memories they had as a
family, everything Sarada doesn’t remember.

Mostly she wishes he would come back and never leave again.

Their bed is much too cold at night, his side neat and empty
and as she wakes up she reaches to where he should be as a reflex, because in
her dreams he’s never that far away.

The bedroom door opens and Sarada steps inside hugging her
panda bear to her chest. “Can I sleep here, mama?” Sometimes she thinks Sarada
sneaks into her bed more for her benefit than anything else, it should be the
mother that comforts the daughter.

Once in her arms the little girl speaks. “When is papa
coming home?”

Sakura doesn’t have an answer, “When all the monsters are
gone.” She whispers into her Sarada’s hair. “He’ll come back to us, he’ll find
a way because you’re father loves us more than anything in the world.” She kisses
the top of her head, is the only answer she can give her.

She knows he’ll be back, she just doesn’t know when. What if the monsters never end?

SasuSaku Month Day 29 : Connected Feelings

Thank goodness I managed to finish something for SSM! I would have drawn more but I’ve been extra busy this month. ;A;

I’m also really glad Sakura grew her hair out again at one point! I really love her long hair~

I was thinking this scene could either be when Sasuke proposes to her or Sakura finds out she’s pregnant. One of those lol
