Day 9: Opposite sides

“I love you, anata.”

She smiled softly, the Uchiha matriarch’s face was one of great content. Sasuke held her in his arms as her life slipped away. All his emotions came crashing down, and tears flowed freely from his face. She’s gone. Uchiha Sakura is gone.

.

.

Dead, like his heart right now.

.

.

She will forever be remembered in the shinobi world as the greatest medic and a part of the legendary team 7.

To her friends, she is the loyal one who is willing to risk her life for her comrades.

To her family, she is the loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love is one of the foundations of the clan itself.

To Uchiha Sasuke, she is the light at the end of the tunnel… his spring… the love of his life… his one and only wife.

Konoha mourned for the loss of Uchiha Sakura and it took a while for the reality to sink in. Life continued – though a bit slowly to those dear to her. But ever since, Sasuke was never the same person again. What kept him going was the last conversation he shared with her, in the gardens under the tree they planted together.

.

.

“Anata… I think I have to leave soon.”

He held her hand and placed it on his cheek. They gaze into each other’s eyes, both with tears starting to fall. Sasuke couldn’t say anything. Words left him again, his heart too hurt for his brain to function coherently.

“Remember our wedding vows, Sasuke-kun? We promised to be together… I believe death can’t take us apart… since our feelings will forever be connected, ne?”

A nod was his reply, and he turned his head to kiss her palm on his cheek. “I… I don’t know what I will do without you, Sakura.”

She smiled at him, sweeter than ever. “I will be here with you Sasuke.” She placed her other hand on his chest, right above his beating heart. “Right here, always and forever.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

Sakura then placed her arms around his waist and placed a cheek on his chest. “Take care of everyone, okay? Take care of yourself also, anata.”

A tear fell from Sasuke’s eyes, and he didn’t bother to wipe it away. “You’re annoying, Sakura.”

Both chuckled, nostalgia hitting them hard. He made her look at him, noticing the tears freely flowing down her cheeks. Lifting two fingers, he gently tapped her forehead, and gave her one of his smiles that was reserved for her – only for her.

“I’ll see you soon.”

Sakura smiled back at him and placed both palms on his cheeks. “Arigatou,” he added.

“For what?”

“For everything.”

The tears made it hard to see, but Sasuke saw with pure clarity the smile which brought the sunshine back into his cold, cruel life.

“I love you, anata.”

.

.

Slowly, his health deteriorated. Everyone was afraid for him, but he wasn’t. He greeted death like an old friend.

Uchiha Sasuke closed his eyes, a small smile forever immortalized on his face. Though the entire family mourned, they knew he is happy now. Everyone knew the two heads of the Uchiha clan couldn’t be separated for too long.

.

.

.

They died on the same day, the same hour and minute – one year apart.

.

.

.

He looked around his new surroundings. Not far from him, someone was coming his way and made his heart leap with happiness. Twelve months may have passed, but he could never forget that hair the color of cherry blossoms and emerald eyes as fresh as spring that draw him in every single time.

He held out his hand, and she smiles as she took it with her own. They may have been on opposite sides of life for a year, but even that couldn’t destroy the red string of fate that connects the two.

No matter what, they’ll always end up together – loving each other forever.

On Oppsite Sides

Prompt: On Opposite Sides

Characters: Sasuke/Sakura, Sarada

Sarada has seen her parents fight before (“it’s not fighting, only a discussion,” her mother would say and her father would agree), but never once would she have imagined that they could become so passionate over something so trivial.

The family of three had been lounging in the kitchen. Sasuke and Sakura both stood at the counter, preparing the family’s routine dinner, while Sarada sat at the table recounting the day’s events.

“I don’t know how,” Sarada paused for a moment to find the right words, “but Boruto managed to make the farmer even angrier than before, and this was after he accidentally sprayed the wrong pesticide all over the crops!”

Sasuke snorted, but otherwise the two parents were silent while their daughter continued her story.

“So I’m thinking, well this mission is a complete failure, but I can’t see how it can possibly get any worse.” Sarada said.

“Oh no,” Sakura intoned.

“Oh yes! Mitsuki, the poor soul, had thought that it would’ve been a good idea to ask the farmer a question to deflect the attention away from Boruto. Except, it only made the farmer explode at us. He kicked us and Konohamaru-sensei off his property!” She pushed her glasses up in a huff, as they began to droop down the slope of her nose. “I can’t ever face Hokage-sama again, not with a mission failure!”

“Sarada, I can assure you the idiot has other things to worry about.”

Sakura stopped chopping the vegetables she had in front of her before throwing her husband a glare, and walking over to face her daughter at the table. Putting her hands on the dark haired girl’s shoulders, she looked into her daughter’s eyes. “What your father means, is that while Lord Seventh is an incredibly powerful ninja now, he wasn’t the most talented ninja at your age.”

“That’s giving him too much credit.” Her father now faced the two.

The woman rolled her eyes and ignored her husband’s comment. “I can’t tell you how many d-rank missions we failed as a team, many of which were Naruto’s fault.”

“Really, Mama?” Sarada asked in disbelief.

“Oh yeah. Big time.”

The family was silent for a moment, while Sakura processed the new information given to her about the Hokage.

“So what was the question Mitsuki asked?” The pink haired woman was curious about what had gotten the farmer so riled that it cost her daughter a successful mission.

“Hm?”

“What did Mitsuki ask the farmer?”

“Oh!” She had forgotten to mention it. “He asked if tomatoes were fruit or vegetables.” She hid the grimace on her face, for she knew that her father enjoyed the little red balls of pure evil.

There was a pause in the Uchiha family. The knife Sasuke had been using to slice thin strips of salmon clattered on the wooden cutting board. “Well, that’s easy,” the father responded monotonously. “Tomatoes are obviously vegetables.”

Her mother clicked her tongue, and replied to her husband. “That’s where you’re wrong. Tomatoes are classified as fruit.”

“I think I would know if tomatoes were fruit, Sakura.”

Standing besides the elder Uchiha female, Sarada watched as her mother crossed her arms haughtily, with a smirk upon her lips. “I suppose the great Sasuke Uchiha can’t know everything.”

“Sakura…”

“Yes, darling?”

“Fruit is sweet. Tomatoes are savory, acidic almost.”

“So?” Sakura asked.

“I hate sweet things. I think I would know if I enjoyed eating it.”

Her mother in return replied with what seemed to be the most sugary voice imaginable. “Well,” she shrugged, ”you enjoy eating me.”

Sarada was horrified, and didn’t even register the blush that resided upon her typically stoic father’s face. “Ew! Ew! Mama! Do you have to say things like that when I’m in the room?”

Sakura had the decency to look a bit ashamed. “Sorry Sarada.”

“I knew Papa and Mama were dirty.” The girl shook her head in disappointment.

The man in the room cleared his throat. “As I was saying, there isn’t a possible explanation as to why tomatoes would be in the same category as another fruit such as a banana.”

Sakura Uchiha moved towards her husband, poking her index finger solidly into her husband’s chest. “There are plenty of explanations, Sasuke-kun, you’re just choosing to be ignorant..”

The man rolled his eyes, and gestured for his wife to continue.

“It’s not about the taste, silly. It’s about the way the fruit is developed.” She emphasized her point by sprouting her hands together, in the form of a plant sprouting. “They come straight from the ovary of a flower, same as cucumbers and other types of squash. I wouldn’t typically tie those together with other more commonly acknowledged fruit, but I can’t change what it is. And what it is, is fruit!”

Sarada was amazed that her mother had put such such thought behind her argument, but it was clear that the same sentiment was lost on her father.

Both renowned shinobis simply stood in the kitchen, practically nose to nose, but on opposite sides of opinion. It was almost comical, for her mother stood on tip toe to seem more intimidating (and almost succeeding if it were not for the flour smeared upon her cheek), and her father, always strong and lean, clad in a frilly yellow apron.

Said man pinched the bridge of his nose with his sole hand. “Sakura, you’re being stubborn-“

“I’m being stubborn? You need to accept science, Sasuke-kun!”

Their daughter, still seated at the dining table briefly pondered if she had enough time to run up to her room to grab her phone to record the squabble between her parents before deciding that the risk of missing too much was greater. Boruto would just have to believe her when she would tell him about what his idolized sensei did in his spare time.

“Well then, science is wrong.” Her father retorted.

Sarada almost burst out laughing at the wild eyed look that her mother took on. The pink haired woman began to sputter, “I- You- What?!”

“You heard me.” The Uchiha male smirked. “Your precious science is wrong.”

“You can’t argue against a classification!”

The salmon on the cutting board was starting to look tempting. Sarada wondered how much longer they were going to argue before they went back to cooking their dinner, she was hungry, she thought glumly as she patted her empty stomach. She hadn’t eaten all day after losing her appetite from the failed mission. The girl cut off the quarrel between the two adults to ask a question. “I get that you both have, uh, passionate opinions on this, but can you do this after dinner?”

It was almost funny how quickly the couple seemed to gain a sense of self-awareness. Immediately, her mother and father seemed to almost deflate.

Sakura had the decency to look sheepish, and apologized. “I’m sorry sweetie, I guess we got a little carried away huh?”

Sarada shrugged, but gave her mother a warm smile in response. She also was able to see the red that tinged the tips of her father’s ears, and burst into giggles. “Papa, can we go out to get ice cream after dinner?”

She knew that normally her father would decline, but figured it was worth the shot. Especially since he seemed to be feeling a little guilty.

He grunted in agreement.

Flirting with Death
1. Opposite Sides

She opened her office, and did her best not to collapse on
the floor. She’d just finished an exhausting shift, and she was certain that
even her hair follicles were tired.

She sank in her chair gratefully and closed her eyes

“Long day, Doctor.”

“You have no idea.”

“But I do” – she doesn’t have to open her eyes to know he is
wearing that familiar smirk of his – “I was watching the whole time.”

“Nothing else to do?”

“Plenty. But less than I had to do before you finished your
surgery.”

She let her head loll toward his voice before opening her
eyes. Her eyesight was bleary with fatigue, and it took a moment for him to
come into focus. Sharp, aristocratic features. Pale, too-perfect skin. Eyes and
hair blacker than obsidian, and the regality of a king.

“I’d say I am sorry,” she offered, “but we both know I am
not.”

He arched one curved brow.

“You do seem determined to defy me at every turn.”

Her own lips twist into a smirk.

“Until the day I draw my last breath,” she challenged.

“We’ll see.”

And then he was gone.

And Sakura found herself wondering what psych ward they’d
commit her to if she told anyone about the conversations she had with Death.

Last year for SS month, I had several ideas for the Necromancer prompt. One became my Detective!Sasuke/Medical Examiner!Sakura oneshot ’Necromancer’ (FFN   AO3   Tumblr)

and the other later became ‘At Death’s Door’

(FFN    AO3   Tumblr).

“At Death’s Door” was originally titled “Flirting with Death,” but I saved that title for this series of divergent scenes that didn’t fit into either AU. This is the first of at least three, maybe five connected scenes.

SasuSaku Month Day 9 – On Opposite Sides

efaya:

Rating: T

Pairing: SasuSaku

Summary: On a cold winter evening, Sasuke steals a kiss from his traveling companion, Sakura. As he drifts to sleep, fresh thoughts of his lover’s lips, he is unexpectedly sharing a pot of tea with his family and Madara Uchiha.

A/N: So I managed to squeeze this one out in two sessions .-. It’s not sexually graphic at all this time around! (Surprising, I know) I tried to keep it applicable to the current canon. It’s set during the Blank period with our lovely couple traversing the world. I had a lot of fun writing this one, particularly the conversation among the dead Uchiha and Sasuke. I remember reading a fanfic before that had him talking with his extended family about Sakura, which I think was written by @kuriquinn but i’m not sure. (I really love your writing if you ever see this! 😀 ) So enjoy some non-smutty, cutesy SasuSaku!

The evenings had been getting
chillier by the day. Winter was approaching quickly, and they had no plans on
returning to the Leaf within the next few months. Sasuke had just finished up
their campfire, while Sakura returned with a small catch of fish. Their days
were spent in the wilderness. It had only been a few weeks since they were sent
out by Kakashi on their current mission. In that small amount of time they had
managed to build a very strong relationship. Sasuke was reluctant to title
their relationship, and I’m content with
that.
He had noticed Sakura was opening up to him more and more these days.
When they first set foot outside of the village together, she seemed very
hesitant to delve deeper into her own past, but especially his. He could sense
she was holding back information, without evoking a dojutsu to verify his
suspicions.

Day 9: On Opposites Sides

Sakura was being held in a cell out of countless others
newly built in the bottom of the Hokage tower. It’s not a place she ever
thought she would be, being held prisoner in her own village. But it wasn’t her
village anymore.

Many of those she knew were being held in cells similar to
her own… no, they were being held in much worse places awaiting much more
severe punishment.

She had been caught in the hospital attempting to wake up
Naruto from his long coma, she was turned in by her own colleagues. Those who
feared their new Hokage more than they respected her. She shouldn’t blame them,
it was called survival. Their punishment for turning a blind eye would have
been much worse than hers for openly challenging his rule.

She could hear the door open and close at the end of the
hall, could hear every step he took toward her cell until he made a stop. She
hadn’t been made to wait long.

She didn’t want to look at him, but she knew how it went and
he wouldn’t speak until she did. Better
get it over with.

When her gaze met his, she was met with the man she had
loved for more than half her life, the man who had betrayed them in the end.
There were some days when she didn’t know which of those statements held more
weight.

That day, the betrayal stung worse.

“Sakura.” He spoke her name with disappointment, she could
almost hear the words he didn’t say. Here
again?

She wasn’t afraid of him, she had already learned she could
get away with much more than anyone else could. Whenever she went against his
rule of rationing to save a patient she was let off with a curt but stern. Don’t do it again.

This time though, she was challenging his rule by trying to
wake up Naruto from his coma. They both knew it was Naruto’s rightful place. He
should kill her for that, he should have killed Naruto long ago. She held onto
that and that’s how she knew he wasn’t all lost.

“You need to stop doing this, I can’t have you undermining
my rule with your every action.” His words were tired, they’ve gone over this
countless times. Any other day his words would have been met with silence, with
her refusing to acknowledge him, that day she was feeling particularly biting.

“Then you’ll have to kill me.” It was yet another challenge.

“So this is the Sakura I’m met with today; the rebel, the
fighter.” His expression was unreadable but his voice was amused. “I much
prefer lover, the traitor to her own.” She didn’t flinch at his accusation,
that day she was strong.

“Are you afraid to kill me? Afraid you won’t be able to come
back from that?” She was baiting him.

“Don’t test me.” He threatened, half expecting her to back
down. She didn’t.

There was a moment of silence between them, their gazes
locked in a silent war neither of them were willing to lose.

“You know how to stop this.” It was a loaded statement. He
could kill her or he could step down from power, neither of which he was
willing to do.

“I will be back tomorrow.” He turned away leaving the unsaid
part of his sentence hanging in the air, I
hope you have a different answer by then.
Sakura didn’t bait him then, she
didn’t know if she could be strong the next day.
