SasuSaku Month 2018 Day 7 – Tanabata

– and a little bit of Day 9; continuation of my Day 3 entry; best read if you wanna go to sleep; a little OOC but I hope you wouldn’t mind

*****

Her own journey was drawing too close.

She found it exhilirating. Their story was not the typical boy-meets-girl-and-they-live-happily-ever type. He was not one to take notice of girls when they were still genin. He would brush off anyone who tried to charm their way to him – and she was not exempted. Although, throughout the course of Team 7’s various D-ranked missions, she was able to at least talk to him often, though he looked annoyed or brooding most of the time. But it gave her a good start.

The subtle, yet clear, message the Uchiwa showed at the back of most of her clothes told her that her love has finally reached Sasuke’s heart.

To her surprise, when he saw her wearing one of the clothes he gave her, a slight blush crept on his cheeks up to his ears which twitched lightly. Which of course became apparent to her face as well. Does she need to a make conclusion that blushing can be epidemic?

Feeling slightly braver of the two, Sakura threw away all the caution outside the window. She flung her arms at his neck, making him blush even more. “Thank you, Sasuke-kun”.

Not missing out on the endearment, Sasuke took a step backward, his fingers finding their way to her forehead just like when he made that secret promise infront of the village gate (“Thank you, I’ll see you soon”), “Hn. Let’s eat before we start travelling again.”.

It was enough to make her blush even more. She somewhat felt like there was more to that forehead poke than what he had let on but she knew he would have to tell her someday. Perhaps, when she starts wearing her clothes with the fan.

*****

Sasuke revealed that part of his plan was to stop by Amegakure so he can pick up her clothes and then travel a few more miles before nightfall. He was certain that tonight was the same time when he witnessed that magic, something he wanted a certain pink-haired kunoichi to witness. His thoughts drifted to her during his journey to redemption. On some days, he would ask himself why she has not given up on him when the only thing he ever did was hurt her. And then Kakashi’s voice would ring inside his head, “Sakura just wanted to save you…”, reminding him how much pain she had to endure because of him.

He was in an endless battle. A part of him wanted to run away from her, Naruto, the village. He will continue his journey and find himself a new home where the Uchicha is just another name. But when he thinks about home, he thinks of Sakura. The sound of her voice when she calls him Sasuke-kun, viridian eyes filled with a myriad of emotions, one of which makes his heart flutter; the feel of her soft skin when he pokes her forehead and the sound of her laughter filling his heart with hope that someday, the same laughter will fill a house he will call their own.

Sakura and the word “home” seemed to agree with each other and so, one night, assuming (and hoping) that she will say yes, he took her clothes and had them embroidered with the Uchiwa. She was the only woman he thinks is worthy of the title, “Uchiha Matriarch”, something his loving late mother carried with pride.

“Are you sure we came to the right place?”

They have arrived at a village near the sea where townsfolk have gathered wearing yukatas. It appears that they were celebrating, several shops lined the streets with some of them selling different kinds of food, others have games where children were left to play while their parents watch with glee. Being a shinobi meant you can rarely enjoy times like this and it was not different for Sakura especially when the Fourth Shinobi war happened in her lifetime. Immediately, her eyes became busy taking it all in. She glanced at one store and then another, almost forgetting about the other shinobi who followed her closely like a shadow.

The aroma of something sweet lured her near the edge of the forest, where a lone stall stood. An old man with a gentle smile on his face motioned for him to come closer. “Have some wagashi, young lady! You look like you could do with sweets.”

She offered her a genuine smile. “Why, thank you!”, she said as the old man served her with what looked like Imagawayaki. “Itadakimasu!”

“I have not seen you before, perhaps you’re travelling?”

She shrugged as she munched on her azuki bean paste filled dessert, “Hai! We did not actually plan to go here but I guess passing by was not a bad idea.” Sakura still haven’t realized that her travelling companion was nowhere in sight.

“Aah, you came with a special someone I am sure. Just in time to celebrate Tanabata.”

Tanabata?! Exactly what date was it again? Have they been travelling together that long that she has not noticed? Flustered, she decided to continue ravishing her imagawayaki. The old man continued, “The universe may conspire to break you apart but fate will always find a way to connect your hearts.”

Sasuke-kun!

Was this a sign? Surely they lived their lives apart but after everything else that happened, but he came home to her. Was it fate that brought him back to her? Were the gods giving her, them, a chance?

As if on cue, the man he loved appeared not far from her. Dark pearls met green ones. He was the first one to break the silence. “I have been looking for you. Come, let’s go to the shrine before the fireworks start.”

Maybe it was the clear and bright sky, or the effect of sugar on her dessert. After thanking the old mad who refused her payment, she took the hand he offered her and they made their way to the shrine. The crowd was thinning so they practically had the shrine to themselves.

“You should write your wish.” Sasuke pointed at the paper infront of them. Looking back at their academy days, she felt really ashamed to let Sasuke read what she wrote when Iruka-sensei asked them who they want to spend their last day with, should the moon fall on the earth. Nothing has changed. The only thing she wrote was the same one she wrote way back.

Uchiha Sasuke.

Heat rose on her face as she remembered that day. It was him, always will be. No matter how many troubles come their way, there can only be one man whose name she will write on a paper. And the said man, who was now facing her, staring intently, took her paper and gave his to her. “I have done nothing but hurt you, but I pray to the gods that they grant me this wish.” With that, her forehead received a poke, something she did not exactly know what meant but made her blush anyway.

The stars, shining brightly as ever, helped her read what he wrote:

A Celebration of Our Own

Day 7: Tanabata

Author’s Note: So I originally planned a hurt/comfort plot for this prompt after squeezing my brain but I don’t need that kind of negativity in my life 😂 Then this idea appeared and… yeah… I crave fluff.

Sakura felt torn, but her responsibilities as a medic nin came before her own selfish desires.

Sasuke just came back from his self-imposed road to redemption yesterday, just in time for the tanabata festival Konoha is known for, and Naruto already arranged that Team 7 will go together. Though he insisted that he was just passing by and wanted to deliver a message to Kakashi, his presence in the village was enough to make the kunoichi smile throughout the day. She knew that the streets would be filled to the brim with decorations and food, and most of all she looked forward to spend some time with her silent dark-haired teammate.

It’s been so long since he came home. He wasn’t able to go to Konoha personally during the attack of the human time bombs when they asked for his help, but he played a crucial part in solving it. She was a bit heartbroken that he couldn’t come back, but she understood his reasons. Sakura knew from the bottom of her heart that the village was Sasuke’s home, and he would always find his way to return to it – in his time, when he’s ready.

That’s why she hugged him a little too tightly when they greeted him at the gates yesterday. After a hearty dinner at Ichiraku’s, Sakura dashed her way to her favourite store to buy a new yukata to celebrate the occasion. It was the perfect shade of green that matched her eyes, with her namesake decorating the obi and sleeves.

Sakura started to fix her things in her office, excitement coursing through her veins. Despite the busy day at the hospital, the thought of being with her beloved team energized her more than her seal. But then, just as she was about to end her shift, she heard a nurse running towards her direction, and the door was slammed open.

“Sakura-sama! I’m sorry for intruding but Tsunade-sama needs you at the emergency room quickly!”

Not needing another word, the medic ran off and arrived in record time. What she saw stunned her momentarily. Four shinobi – ANBU, the masks and their outfit were a dead giveaway – were fighting for their lives on the hospital beds. One suddenly started vomiting a bloody mess, and Sakura sprung into action.

“It’s a bad case of poisoning, Sakura. I already had Shizune look at their blood samples to identify the culprit,” the former hokage briefed her on what was happening. “It’s making them bleed profusely, slowly turning their organs to goo, and shutting down the immune system. We need to act fast.”

“Hai, shishou.”

Immediately her healing chakra glowed.

Sakura forgot about the seconds, minutes, and hours that passed. All her focus was on her patients and the determination to save them urged her tired body to heal them more. And when she thought that ordeal was over, her pediatric patient with a broken pelvis started deteriorating, leaving her no choice but to perform another surgery stat.

.

.

Sakura removed the OR cap and went back to her office to take a warm shower. It was already ten in the evening, and she already sent word to Naruto that she couldn’t come to the festival with them, as she was stuck in surgery. She passed by a nurse’s station and saw a bamboo plant decorated with all things that showcased tanabata and filled with tanzaku. She saw he own piece of paper, wincing inside.

I hope Team 7 will have a great time at the festival today!

There’s always next year, right?’ Sakura thought to herself, smiling sadly. ‘There’s always next time.

The kunoichi sighed and proceeded to take the aforementioned shower to wash away the stress and frustration of the day. After changing into a new set of clothes, she grabbed her swivelling chair and took it to the balcony. Her stomach protested that it was empty, but she paid it no mind. She just wants to see the fireworks. She looked up the sky, waiting for it to shine with a thousand colors.

Just then she felt her heart stop when she recognized an all too familiar chakra signature. She could sense him anywhere.

“Sa-Sasuke-kun?!”

Indeed, mismatched orbs that could only belong to the sole Uchiha greeted her. “Aa.”

Sakura stood up, a blush forming on her cheeks. “What are you doing here? I thought you were going with Naruto and the rest.”

He shrugged. “I escaped. Too many people. You know I don’t like the crowds.”

She couldn’t help but laugh good naturedly. “Still the same old Sasuke-kun. Let me get a chair for you,” she offered, dashing inside and appearing with the furniture a second later.

“Arigatou,” his deep voice could still make her heart melt. Both sat side by side in silence for a few moments, until Sasuke handed out a bento box to her hidden by his cloak.

“I had a feeling that you still haven’t eaten anything since you were in surgery, so I brought you something.”

Tears of joy started to form on her eyes and now she was certain that her heart’s gonna burst. “You didn’t have to do this, Sasuke-kun. But thank you so much,” she beamed at him. The former avenger looked away hide his emotions, but his orbs focused on her again when he heard her delighted gasp.

Sakura recognized the street food served at the stalls during tanabata. The first layer contained okonomiyaki, takoyaki, yakisoba and ikayaki. When she lifted it to see the next layer, it was filled with dango, daifuku, and ringo ame.

“I know that you liked festivals and the food so much, so I thought that since you’re busy saving lives, I’ll bring a bit of the festival to you,” he admitted, eyes earnest.

She didn’t know if someone already died due to too much giddiness and overwhelming happiness, but Sakura though she might be the first one. She stood up, placed the food carefully on the chair, and tackled Sasuke into a hug that caused the two of them to fall on the floor.

“Thank you thank you thank you, Sasuke-kun! I’m so happy right now!” Indeed, the night took a 360 degrees turn, and she couldn’t be happier. Here she thought she would be spending the seventh day of the seventh month alone, but now she’s with the man she loves with her whole heart, and he brought her favourite festival foods to her.

You’re just making me fall in love with you even more, Sasuke-kun.

All of a sudden she felt him stiffen. It was then that it registered upon her brain that she said her feelings out loud.

Just as she was about to pull away and apologize again and again, Sasuke hugged her back. Now it was her turn to be shocked.

“Anything for you, Sakura.” He pressed his cheek at the side of her head, and the kunoichi wondered if it was her heart that was beating so hard or his. She loosened her hug on him to look at his profile. Unconsciously, almost like instinct, their faces came closer to one another. It felt like the pull of gravity, sparks tingling the air.

When their noses touched, a screeching sound was heard following a loud explosion. The fireworks finally started. Noticing their position, they both turned away to hide their blushing faces, deciding that the display of colors signalling the end of tanabata was a good thing to turn their attention to. Throughout the time that the night sky was illuminated with sparks of light, Sasuke didn’t release his hold on her waist, and Sakura could hardly pay attention to the beautiful display.

The heard the cheers of the crowd when the last and biggest firework shone its glory. After a few minutes, neither of them spoke a word, too content in each other’s presence.

Then Sakura’s stomach grumbled again.

She felt the blush heating her face up, and the amused smirk Sasuke gave her did nothing to calm her down.

“You should eat,” the Uchiha announced with almost a teasing tone. After saying her thanks, she digged in, closing her eyes in pure happiness when she tasted the takoyaki. Munching on it, she took another ball of the food using her chopsticks.

“Say aah, Sasuke-kun.”

He looked away and she pouted at that, but her heart soared again when she saw his mouth partly open, his silent affirmation to allow her to do what she wanted.

And so that was how the two spent their first tanabata together in a while… eating, her talking, him listening… both knowing that there was no other place they’d rather be.

“I’m fine,” Sasuke snapped for the umpteenth time. The nurse that had been trying to fuss over him for the past few minutes glared at him and left.

He’d been put in a room and left alone after Ino double checked he wasn’t in any danger. Not even Naruto had come to find him, and while he was glad on that account, it was also suspicious. Nobody was answering his questions about what happened with the mission or what had happened to Sakura. Her screams were still ringing in his ears, haunting him.

The door to his room suddenly slammed open, making him flinch for half a second before he composed himself. The former Hokage glared down at him as she strode into the room, an orange blob coming in right behind her. She dragged a chair from the corner of the room and took a seat right in front of him, his medical file open on her lap.

“I assume you have questions, brat,” she scoffed in irritation.

“What happened to Sakura?” That was the only thing he was truly concerned with.

Behind her, Naruto shook his head with terrified eyes, signaling at him to drop the question. He slapped his forehead at the same time Tsunade snapped the pen in her hand.

“Technically speaking, you were dead, Uchiha,” declared Tsunade. “Your heart couldn’t handle the stress from the poison and the discharges from the chakra restraints.”

He frowned. “Then how…?”

“My student is the only goddamn reason you’re alive,” she responded through gritted teeth. “Sakura used a jutsu that I strictly forbade her from using unless her own life was in danger and it was the absolutely last option.”

Sasuke’s frown deepened. He had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach.

“Since you were beyond medical healing, Sakura took some of her life force and transferred it to you,” she continued. “This is different than when she uses the byakugō, what she used was pure life essence that draws from her life force.”

“Erm, so you’re saying Sakura-chan sacrificed years off of her life just to bring the teme back to life?” Naruto asked wide eyed.

Day’s Notes: a look across the years.

Turning her head side to side, it still felt awkward to feel the ends of her hair skimming against her neck.

Passing all of the stalls, the noise of the busy festival sounded far away, as if she dunked her head under water.

The feeling was constant. Having Sasuke out of sight made it feel like her chest was collapsing in on itself and the air was thinning.

She was scared.

She couldn’t shake the feeling that if she took her eyes off of him for a moment that he would disappear.

“━kura-chan!”

Sakura paused in the middle of the street and turned. Naruto slowed down as he took his last steps to stand right next to her.

“I’ve been calling after you for a while now!”

Naruto’s face twisted into an ugly pout and Sakura sighed. She had told him she wasn’t going to attend the festival when he had tried to ask her on a date. She hoped he wouldn’t ask her about why she was out.

“I thought you were staying home tonight?”

There was a brief pause where Sakura didn’t know how to respond. If they still had the same relationship they did when they were Academy students she would have told him off and stormed away with a toss of her hair. But he was her teammate now and could be considered a friend despite his bratty attitude.

“Well now that you’re out we can at least watch the fireworks!”

Sakura smiled softly. Leave it to Naruto to stay upbeat.

But she didn’t want to see the fireworks with Naruto. She originally planned for Team Seven to go to the festival together so that even if it wasn’t a date, she could still be with Sasuke on a day that celebrated lovers.

Sasuke was in the hospital so there was no chance of a pseudo-romantic evening. She went to hang up her wish for his good health and was going to head home.
