Title: At Last
Summary: The day Sakura found out she was pregnant was quite one to
remember indeed.
Disclaimer: I don’t own Naruto.
Prompt: That Day
Rating: M
A/N: While I don’t believe they planned to have a baby on the road,
this is still a fun and cute scenario to think about. I had lots of fun writing
this 🙂

It wasn’t exactly how she’d ever pictured
she would find out: sitting in the middle of a forest, tending to a campfire,
watching the love of her life training aggressively against the trunk of an old
tree, the warmest smile to her lips—and then, a faint thrumming sensation, odd
and completely unfamiliar, sparking low in her belly.

Bemused, Sakura looked down on herself and
blinked, touching a palm to her abdomen. An infection, perhaps? she mused,
brows furrowing. Shaking her head, the thought was dismissed near-instantly;
no, that wasn’t possible—in all her years of experience, she knew with
certainty that infections had never been capable of throwing chakra paths off
route so much.

Growing evermore perplexed, Sakura simply
summoned forth the most basic of her medical techniques, setting about a
curious exploration to her body. It was only seconds before she found herself
stiffening rigidly, brilliant mind blanking and green eyes snapping wide,
rendered entirely speechless by her discovery.

It wasn’t an infection—she’d been right
about that. And it wasn’t an instability in her chakra channels either—in fact,
there was absolutely nothing wrong
with her.

No, she was simply… pregnant.

Her heart stuttered in her chest. A flurry
of warmth washed over the whole of her. Pregnant, she thought again, feeling
the sweet pulse of this new chakra.

Flirting With Death
4. Thank You

It had taken some major convincing, but Sakura finally felt ahead enough in her work to go out for an actual full-on frat party. It helped that she knew enough people to feel comfortable, and she’d actually been having a fun time – right up until she saw him leaning against the wall, watching with the kind of nonchalance that would’ve had girls crawling over him, provided they could see him and that the didn’t know he was, well Death.

“What are you doing here?!” she hissed, looked around furtively before grabbing his arm and pulling him into the bathroom. She locked the door, and turned to glower at him, accusingly.

“You followed me.”

“I’m working.”

“Here?” she paled as her eyes grew large in her face. “At a party?”

“With this much binge drinking going on, are you surprised?” he scoffed. “At least three of the residents here have had alcohol poisoning to the degree that I was five or so minutes from having to make a first and final introduction.”

She paled, and her breath caught in her throat.

“Is…is that why you are here? To take someone?”

“No,” he said calmly, and she visibly deflated with relief. “I have other cause to be here. Starting with your drink.”

3. Ancient History

Sakura was one of those kids that was friends with everyone in high school. She didn’t pick fights (except with Ino, who she only fought with the way best friends fight), she didn’t speak badly about anyone, and she was always willing to help a friend in need.

Consequently, she had a wide range of friends from the archetypal popular kids to their antithesis, and everywhere in between.

Right now, she was thinking of her handful of friends that dressed in shades of black and declared a fascination with death, and what they would say if she told them that Death could be a huge dork.

Especially when she was trying to study.

Day 21: Not Everything’s in Black and White

After the war it took longer than Sakura thought it would
for everything to go to how it once was, if she was truthful things were never
the same. Team 7 was never able to reclaim lost time and thinking they would
was only a child’s dream she never had the courage to let go.

Kakashi was forced to take on the role as Hokage and Naruto
spend so much time learning about his upcoming responsibilities as Hokage in
and out of the village that she barely ever saw him. After being incarcerated
for months, Sasuke was finally released, but the man they let out of the cell
was a stranger.

Team 7 seemed to be broken into tiny little pieces that didn’t
seem to fit back together anymore.

The only one of them she ever saw anymore was Sasuke.

Sometimes she saw him in the training ground when the sun
hadn’t even risen and she was on her way to work, other times she saw him in
the market attempting to hold the bag of vegetables with his remaining arm, but
most times she saw him when she took rounds at the rebuilding sites across the
village to heal minor injuries caused by construction.

She had finished treating the injuries, minor cuts and at
least two cases of dislocated arms, after warning them to be more careful she
turned to the rebuild site. They were building and apartment complex and in the
distance she could see as Sasuke helped carry building materials.

“You’re Sasuke-san’s teammate, right?” She turned to see a
middle aged man ask her, she didn’t have the heart to correct him, she hadn’t
been his teammate for a long time, so she nodded instead. “Then maybe you can
get him to take a break, he’s been working all day.”

Her gaze turned to Sasuke then, she walked over not knowing
what she would say when she approached him, they hadn’t spoken since the war
ended.

He caught sight of her as she walked toward him, setting
aside what he was doing he turned to her. “Sakura.”

“Sasuke.” She replied, up close he looked like he hadn’t
slept in weeks, out of breath, and probably pushing himself a little too far. His
eyes were tired, everything in him screamed exhaustion and she wanted to reach
out to him.

She had studied his medical record, even the parts that
weren’t for her to see. It was unethical, but she had read Sasuke’s psychological
report, patient expresses being tired of
living
it had said, he had admitted it in a moment of weakness and
afterwards closed off.

To everyone else he would look like an exemplary citizen, or
at least someone making good use of a granted second chance. To her, he seemed
to be dragging through life, dragged down by a past he couldn’t escape and
Sakura didn’t know what to do.

“Stop looking at me like that.” He snapped, and she
remembered the file again. He’s prone to
anger. He fears compassion.

“Like what?” She asked. “I’m just worried about you, Sasuke.”
That was the wrong thing to say, he tensed up and when she reached out to him
he took a step back, out of her reach in more ways than one.

“I’m tired of everyone looking at me like I’m a time bomb, I
don’t know why I thought you’d be different. I’m not your patient so you can
stop doing whatever this is.” He gestured all around her, his words hurt. When
had she forgotten how to connect with him? Had she ever known how?

She opened her mouth to speak, but there were no right
words. We could go back to how we used to
be
. It was a child’s dream. Pieces were scattered, pieces were missing, and
no amount of trying was ever going to fit the puzzle back together.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I have things to do.” She was left
standing there watching his back.

Day 22 – An Outsider’s Point of View

fandom: naruto

warnings: i’m using the international system of units so for those who aren’t familiar with it, 15 m. is about 49 ft. also don’t take this piece too seriously i just went wild out of nowhere and i am just too lazy to change

It was a case of in-the-wrong-place-at-the-wrong-time.

They hadn’t noticed him yet and Boruto prayed the gods to stay unnoticed because he knew a free pass to hell was waiting for him should he be discovered in the bushes.

He wasn’t supposed to be here, hiding in the bushes and watching them make out. In fact, he wasn’t supposed to watch at all—but Boruto couldn’t keep his eyes away from them. He was drawn to them.

And he felt absolutely like a pervert.

And a voyeur.

Luckily—or unluckily, whether the reader is feeling lewd or not, there were at least a good fifteen metres separating him from the couple so he couldn’t see their faces clearly, but auntie Sakura’s pink hair and uncle Sasuke’s black cloak were unmistakable.

It was just a peck, at first. It had been so innocent that Boruto fought back the urge to snicker when he saw it. Instead, his lips stretched into a mischievous smile as he watched Sakura tug on Sasuke’s cloak, pulling his head downward so that she could kiss him softly on the mouth.

So ingenuous, so chaste.

But that all changed when the Fire Na—

(SORRY. WRONG SHOW.

It could have worked, though.)

Ahem.

—But that all changed when Sasuke attacked.

His hand caught her waistband before she could step away and he pulled her against him. If at first, Sakura had seemed surprised, she quickly responded to his enthusiast by looping her arms around his neck, tangling her fingers through his black hair.

(From his spot, it looked like she was pulling at his hair rather fiercely and knowing Sakura’s ridiculously beastly strength, Boruto was quite afraid Sasuke would go bald.

And what a letdown that would be.)

He watched as Sasuke’s hand drifted from Sakura’s waistband to her bare midriff, stroking the flesh with his thumb and judging from the breathy moans and quiet groans he could hear whenever their lips parted, they seemed to be really into it.

Boruto was into it, too.

Therefore, when they disappeared in a puff of smoke two minutes later, Boruto felt strangely disappointed. It wasn’t really educational—not that it was supposed to be—but it was raw and oddly fascinating. He’d seen his parents smooching before and it grossed him out but that was probably because it was his parents and Sakura and Sasuke were totally a different matter… or maybe not.

Boruto considered what happened very slowly.

He’d been watching them make out.

Hidden in the bushes.

So he was a voyeur; he could live with that.

But that was his master. His dad’s best friends.

His childhood friend’s parents.

Oh.

Sarada’s parents.

Oh.

Shit.

HOLY—

.

.

He could never face Sarada again.

Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto or any of characters. I am making no profit off of this and am only writing it for my entertainment. The same goes for the story Anastasia.

A/N: Reminder for those just tuning in, Hiei = Sasuke’s alias. This is probably going to be the most action packed chapter until more towards the end. We’ll see. I have plans. I was foolishly hoping that I’d have this entire AU finished by the end of SasuSaku Month, but that was ambitious and will not be happening because this fic just keeps growing. That being said, I think this chapter would fit nicely under the Lean on Me prompt.

Unbeta-ed.

[ao3] [fanfic]

Chapter 2

Hiei darted through the palace with Kabuto and his lackeys hot on his heels. Portraits and finery sped by him in blurs. Haunting screams fled his mind as every ounce of his being began to focus on escaping. You have to survive. Words that followed him throughout his entire life and urged him on when there was no hope to be had, rang in his head. He was sure he’d never stepped foot in the palace before that day. He should be at a loss for where to go, but every turn he took, every hallway he ran down, managed to put more distance between himself and his pursuers. His feet knew where to take him without hesitation.

Perhaps he should have found it odd that even when he’d turned into an old children’s bedroom, he didn’t panic. Deftly, he picked up a lamp and used the heavy base to smash the window open. A few more hits and the sharp pieces of broken glass clattered to the ground, leaving an opening large enough for him to escape through, but the footsteps were upon the room, and the noise of shattering glass left no question as to where he was.

Day 20: Déjà vu

As Sasuke opened his eyes the surroundings around him were
familiar, reminding him of a time where he’d yet to make as many mistakes. The
white sterile walls and the sun shining through the window made the room feel
bright, it took him a moment until his sight adjusted.

As he tried to sit up in the hospital bed, he couldn’t help
but notice how his remaining hand was cuffed to the bed, as if that would stop
him should he decide he’d want to escape.

Sakura sat in a chair near his bed, her attention was on him
as she set her book away. “How are you feeling?” She asked, the medic in her
taking over, who knew how long he’d been asleep. The last thing he remembered
was her healing him after the battle with Naruto.

“Well.” He replied, a little stiff and disoriented, but he
knew that was probably natural. He turned his gaze toward his cuffed wrist.

“They wanted to take precautions…in case you decided to
leave the village again.” She trailed off before adding, “Naruto insisted it
was not necessary, but holding you here in the hospital over guard beats the
alternative.” Throwing you in a cell.
He could tell she didn’t want to say the words, but there was no need to
sugar-coat it, he was a criminal.

She reached for a bowl nearby and held it over to him, he
just watched her. “You must be hungry.” He struggled against the cuff on his
wrist, as if to remind her he couldn’t take the plate, much less eat on his
own. “Right.” She said, her cheeks turning pink.

She reached into the bowl and held a small slice of apple to
his mouth. Apples. He couldn’t help
but recall a similar scene back when they were children, when everything had
yet to turn completely wrong. He could see her recalling the same instance,
probably half expecting him to turn her away.

Instead he opened his mouth and bit into the slice she held
for him, his lips slightly brushing with her fingers. He ate in silence,
savoring the sweet taste of the fruit and how good it felt to eat after who
knows how long.

“Thank you.” He finally spoke as she handed him another
slice, the shock in her expression lasted only a moment before she smiled, like
she used to smile back then, back before everything went wrong.

Day 21 – Not Everything is Black and White

.

.

.

She beseeches her reputation of being the virtuous and pure member of team seven. She hides her blush with the tilt of her head, and the carefully controlled tone of her voice, “Good morning Sasuke-kun,” she says, quiet and without a give-away to the pain she feels within her left palm. She digs her fingernails into her skin – a last ditch attempt to control her thoughts.

Sasuke answers cordially, then turns to look for whether or not the other members of their squad will show up soon.

It was a reunion – of sorts.

A team lunch, just to catch up. Just to see how things were going. A frivolous formality, if you will, since she knew already what everyone was up to. There were no secrets with their status. Naruto had begun seriously looking into what is required for the role of Hokage. Said Hokage; Kakashi, facilitates that dream and Sasuke – Sasuke.

Sasuke is in the village for three more days. He will leave after that. Once more, once again.

She knows what her team has been up to. So the point of this lunch is moot from her end. But she attends anyway. Its the right thing to do.

“They’re late,” Sasuke mutters, turning to her.

Sakura nods, her voice fails her in any sort of expected response.

Day 19: Regrets

Sasuke regretted leaving the
village, every time he came back things were no longer the same way he left
them. Time went on without him and time would continue to go on without him.

He missed his daughter’s first day in the academy, he missed
countless birthdays, countless anniversaries, he’s not sure if he should be
surprised that he missed his daughter’s marriage.

“Boruto is a good man.” His wife told him the night he returned
as she readied herself for bed. Sasuke didn’t think anyone would ever be good
enough for his baby girl, but he hadn’t been around enough to get a say in the
matter.

He was reminded by the wedding picture that Sarada was not
his baby girl anymore, she’s grown and she hasn’t needed her papa in years.

Life had past him by and he had broken every vow he had ever
made to Sakura. I’ll be by your side in
sickness and in health, always. Always.
He had spent more time away than he
spent around. “Who handed her over in the wedding?”

“Kakashi.” She paused before speaking again. “She tried
reaching you, I tried reaching you, but you were uncommunicated for months…” He
couldn’t reproach, they shouldn’t have to put their lives on hold because of
him.

“Just another cornerstone in her life I missed.” He could
hear the regret in his own voice. Sakura took his face in her hands and turned
him to face her a sad smile forming on her lips, she kissed his forehead then,
a small peck before she drew back.

“She understands, dear.” Sasuke nodded stiffly. “Welcome back.”
She added after a moment, her smile turning bright and genuine. For a moment it
was like he was back in time, back in that moment where he decided to come back
with the intent to stay, with the promise of always. Sakura didn’t look a day older, she was the only constant thing
in his life, and the only thing time couldn’t seem to touch.

She drew him in for a kiss and he was finally home, but for
how long?
